CHAPTER FIFTEEN

October arrives and proceeds to fly by. The leaves change colour, the sound of geese heading south is prominent in the air, and you can’t go anywhere without being bombarded by pumpkin- or apple-flavoured everything. Have I mentioned I love autumn?

If I thought my course load was heavy before, it was nothing compared to the weeks leading up to midterms. Most days when I get home from placement or school, I study until I feel like I’m going to go blind. Even though I’m squinty and tired when I’m done, I usually spend an hour or so before bed playing around with my sewing machine or sketching designs. Olivia has already sold all three of my pieces and is eager for more. This fact still leaves me mind-boggled every time I think about it.

Carmen and I haven’t put a label on ‘us’ yet, but we see each other regularly. I visit her at the dorms, and we meet at the Centre. I haven’t invited her to my place yet. I think she wonders why, but I still haven’t told River I’m seeing her. I intended to tell him after our first date, but he was asleep on the couch when I got home. Then I planned to tell him the next day and the next and on and on, but something always got in the way. I feel like a coward, but now it’s gotten to the point where it’s going to be weird telling him since it’s been a few weeks and he has no idea.

A couple nights before midterms begin, I go to Carmen’s so she, Hannah, and I can study together. River is meeting a group of classmates at the library. The last week or so has been hectic, but with River preoccupied it’s been easier to meet Carmen and not have to answer questions. Just thinking that makes guilt gnaw at my stomach. I need to tell River.

Hannah is a jittery mess. Class was finished around two today, and she came back to the dorms to dive into studying. After running some errands, I got here around five, bearing pizza—AKA the study food of champions—and Hannah was on her second pot of coffee. She was practically vibrating, so I cut her off and made her switch to water. It’s five hours later, and she’s still wired, but she has that glassy-eyed look of someone who could crash any minute.

Carmen and I keep sneaking glances at each other and trying not to giggle. I’m feeling the pressure of midterms, but I know I’ve worked hard in class and at placement, and I’m confident I’ll do well on my exams. Jo told me she and Kit have written positive evaluations for my professors, so I know I’ve aced the placement portion of midterms, which is a relief.

Hannah drops her head into her hands and groans. Carmen and I have neat piles of books and papers in front of us, while Hannah’s side of the table is a cluttered mess of notebooks, textbooks, crumpled papers, and water bottles.
